Agriculture
There are two types of agriculture, subsistence farming and commercial farming. Subsistence farming is when farmers grow enough food to support just their own family, but commercial farming is when farmers grow an abundance of food with the intention of selling it to others. 11% of the labor force in Grenada is made up of farmers. Most of the farming done in Grenada is done by small farmers, rather than on plantations or large estates. Along with agriculture being run mostly by smaller farmers , this means that instead of mixed crop farms, farmers focus on one crop to grow. A big factor in the world of agriculture today is something called the Green Revolution. This is what people like to call the agricultural revolution happening now, the Third Agricultural Revolution. Some big factors the differentiate the Green Revolution from other revolutions is that it experiments with GMOs (genetically modified organisms), which modifies crops and sometimes animals to make them survive in less desirable conditions while producing the most amount of food possible. There is much controversy over whether or not these new methods of farming are healthy, which makes it hard to predict where farming in Grenada will be in the future. If the use of GMOs continues in farming in Grenada, this can possibly lead to the transition from mostly many small farmers, to only a few large farmers because of the lack of need for labor to tend to the crops as the crops become more self-sustainable. Like in many core counties today we will possibly see a shift to commercial agriculture in Grenada.
